I love writing about meditation and mindfulness. It’s always a pleasure (and honor) for me to be able to bring my experience and talents in the art of contemplative practices to those who may benefit from what I have to offer (in my mind, everyone!)
Recently the term “situational awareness” has entered the conversation of mindfulness and I’d like to share my views on how and why we can think of situational awareness as being a “natural consequence” or outcome of a meditation practice.
At its heart, mindfulness can be experienced as a spacious and clear awareness of the present moment, free from the habitual distractions that normally plague the mind. Within mindfulness, it’s not that the distractions don’t arise; it’s just that they don’t cause our mind, our awareness, to stray from the present or – within the context of situational awareness – from the task-at-hand.
